Red Cliff Part 2 – Saga ends

The first part of John Woo’s Red Cliff, movie based on China’s Three Kingdoms period, was to say the least quite impressive.  To me, it lived up to the hype especially providing enough time for character build up showcasing the necessary elements leading to the epic battle at Red Cliff.  The second half unfortunately fell short to the expectations left from the first movie. Red Cliff 2 continues where the first part left off but it takes a wild turn from what could have been; especially with its great cast.  Red Cliff 2 primarily focuses on Zhuge Liang (Takeshi) and Zhou Yu (Tony Leung).  It also focuses more on Zhou Yu’s wife and Cao Cao.  It deviates from what made the first part great which displayed at least to me a sense of historical accuracy from Zhao Yun’s... Continue Reading...

The tale of Red Cliff saga begins

Based on the events at the end of the Han Dynasty in China leading to the period called the Three Kingdoms period; John Woo returns to Asian Cinema to bring one of the greatest turning points in that period, the Battle of Red Cliff, to the big screen. How big a deal is this? This is the most expensive Chinese movie to date estimated at $80 million dollars to produce. Big name actors from Chow Yun Fat, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai had all been cast once to play these important historical figures. The movie adaptation is based on the events at the Red Cliff (Chi Bi) where the outcome decided the fate of the end of Han and creation of the three separate kingdoms; the Shu, Wei and Wu.
