How I did my iPhone unlock and update to 1.1.3

I have had an iPhone since October of last year [2007] and even though it was unlocked to work with any sim; I had left it as that.  I did not put any extra software since I didn’t have installer.  Also, I was still sitting on firmware 1.0.2.  I was not all interested in updating the iPhone until there was a firmware worth the upgrade.  That is until I saw some of the functions available on the 1.1.3 firmware that I decided to update.

Did I want to take it back to where I purchased my phone for the update?   I probably could have taken it there but they would have charged me for it.  Also, I would miss out on all the fun of actually unlocking my own iPhone.  Since the iPhone came out, there have been numerous development teams out there unlocking and jailbreaking the phone so you run additional applications on the iPhone.  I did not know the potential to all this until I actually successfully updated my iPhone and jailbroken it.

Any one with an iPhone, reliable internet connection and some computer knowledge is able to do this as well.  It takes about 3 hours of your time (conservatively speaking) but you will enjoy your iPhone so much more.  From my own experience, you just need to be able to follow directions thoroughly and exactly and even if you fail; you can restore your firmware back to a state where you are able to start over.  This process sure has been made a lot easier.

Before you start make your way over to this website and sign up for their forums.  This is the only source you will need to do any hacking.  From here, just look at what actually applies to your situation.  In my situation; I needed to get my iPhone up to 1.1.1 before actually doing any real work.  So I had to virginize my iPhone and do a full restore of 1.1.1.  I will go over instructions later…

After successfully getting 1.1.1 to be activated and unlocked; just update it to 1.1.2 and 1.1.3.  Specific steps are given and I will cover later on.

Here are some of the cooler applications I am using for my iPhone w/ 1.1.3:

  • MxTube - It downloads YouTube videos to your iPhone.  Keeps it on another folder but the fact you are able to download and watch videos any time without a WiFi connection is just to awesome and I have to share.
  • Voice Recorder - Now I am able to record voice messages onto my iPhone; this can come in handy for note taking or just recording funny sounds.
  • Summerboard - Ability to change icons and themes of the look of what the user interface looks like.  The packages available are only moderate; I only hope for better designs out there with better colors.
  • iRadio - Now with a WiFi connection, I am able to stream radio via the iPhone.  Unfortunately, these are just servers and not actually radio stations.  It would be nice to stream internet from overseas; hopefully they can have an interface where I can input a direct URL.

These are just four applications I have added that I think will make my iPhone that much more productive.  I also have music simulators ranging from drums, guitar to piano.  Also additional games like wannabe BeJeweled, Chess, etc. will keep my wife happy.  Some features I hope to come out soon is the ability to send pictures and songs via Bluetooth in the future.  This will really unlock the potential of the iPhone as a true handheld multimedia device.  It puts the iPhone to shame when a Sony Ericson can transfer songs over to a BenQ phone.  Only time will tell, but thumbs up to all the people developing for the iPhone and making all of the above possible.
