I have been using my Apple iPhone for a couple months now and it is a great gadget, even though I have not even did any modifications such as using the JailBreakMe application. Clearly the iPhone has alot of computing power yet it is severely crippled but for me, it is such an upgrade of bounds and leaps from a Nextel i830 phone that did not even have a camera that I am mostly satisfied with the stock iPhone.
However, evidently there is a host of 3rd party applications one can do to unlock or tap the potential power of the iPhone. At the moment of this writing, I do not know if there is anyway capable using the iPhone to make voice calls to other telephone numbers with its wi-fi capability but that certainly would be suite. No need to be dependent on your cell phone carrier’s minutes or reception, instead, just make a call using a software.
I propose Apple team up with Skype and make it compatible as an add on for iTunes. If that ever happens, basically, every iPod owner, iPhone owner, Apple user that uses iTunes will have Skype as a chat/voice client. In addition, the iPod touch and iPhone with its iTunes ability can also call out with other Skype user in the network, or call internationally by signing up. It would be a two birds with one stone analogy where it truly becomes an all in one device as far as telecommunications go. It will be a cell phone and a wi-fi capable phone and this would make sense. Skype is a great service as I have used it for a couple years now for making international calls or keeping in touch while traveling abroad or just with friends over seas.
This idea of mine is probably even greater than the one I had before, when I suggested to my company at the time, Wayport Inc. to partner up with Nintendo and McDonald’s to offer free wireless at their hot spots. Sure, it came through but I swear that idea was mine. My reasoning at the time is Nintendo’s new portable the DS had wi-fi capabilities and as Wayport already had a partnership to do McDonald’s hot spot, it only made sense, since mostly kids would be playing on these game machines and if they can play wirelessly and hang out at McDonald’s, it potentially gave incentives to all parties.
I have not figured out the incentive for Apple or Skype, but I’m sure there is advertisement, subscriber services, and production revenue potential here. What do you all think?
PS: If you happen to me an Apple or Skype exec, don’t forget about me if this plan ever formulates and offer me some type of Director of Marketing position.
