If you are a meeting planner, coordinating a convention conference or expo show or the IT manager of a hotel then you will need to consider bumping up your current bandwidth if you are still using a single T-1. The reason is, a single T-1 is just not sufficient any more for holding a conference nowadays especially entering the Web 2.0 age where multimedia and interactivity is key. No more are the days where browsing the web and checking email was the only need for having internet access.
Attendees are expecting more and want to pay less. And if you are using limited bandwidth such as a single T-1 to split between guest rooms, meeting rooms and your administration side, then you are looking for trouble. Sure, you can gamble that all the attendees are staying in your hotel and are inside the general session and not in the guest room and you can gamble that your employees are not abusing their internet privileges at work. The truth is, neither of these scenarios are always true and if the network comes to a crashing halt, you will definitely suffer an unsuccessful conference.
So when you are planning for an event, make sure to understand the property your conference will be held and if the property does not have an technical representative, you can cross that destination off. Also understand what you will be using the bandwidth for during your event and ask the correct questions so none of the crisis problems will arise during your event.
In the next section, I will discuss costs and pricing and how to save you money as a meeting planner.
