This is a typical question I am asked about frequently. Especially if you have just moved and were using your previous ISP (internet service provider) carrier’s email address. Here is an example:
Your email address is johndoe@carrier1.net and all your settings are set for that. You do not want to change your email address so you keep it even though carrier2 has given you an email address as well. However, your POP3 and SMTP settings are still set for carrier1 which most likely could be mail.carrier1.net for both POP3 and SMTP.
So you still want to use your old email but can only receive and have problems sending email. The work around for this is very simple. POP3 is to receive and SMTP is to send. You connect to the same POP3 service which is mail.carrier1.net and it works normally. It is your SMTP setting that you will need to change. So please contact your ISP or go online and look for their SMTP server and put that server in. It is probably something like mail.carrier2.net.
I am writing this because many people try to configure Gmail or Yahoo! mail or Hotmail to their email program such as Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc. These are all web mail services but they do give you the option to work with email programs. So they give you settings but you will need to make sure that your POP3 is set to their setting and your SMTP setting is set up to your ISP carriers.
I hope this article has been helpful. I did not include images or step by step configurations for different mail programs as ISP’s usually provide these. I am just giving you a hint to help resolve the fact that you cannot send out email.
