From scrap metal opportunity, to exporting new cars and now another lucrative opportunity is presented to me. The scrap battery export business. Used batteries to be sent out of the United States, either smelted down to be used as another form of raw material or to be recycled for its core. Now I am no expert at this but after researching through, this is an industry of short supply and high demand; also since it is hazardous material, a whole lot of government regulations.
I tried calling around and using the typical methods such as browsing through Alibaba and TradeKey in search of a reliable supplier. To my disappointment, scrap battery is in high demand as there are too many potential buyers looking for metro ton after metro ton willing to pay big bucks for this. Another obstacle is battery type as there are quite a few different core types where some cannot be recycled and some are straight out hazardous. All this just proves, this is not going to be an easy task but hopefully I will find a reliable resource.
I called Interstate batteries and they would not even deal with me. They would only tell me that they will buy my car battery back for $5. What I really want to know is where are their batteries ending up at? Only answer is either it will be recycled or it will be going out to be smelted. Definitely stumped on this and I cannot find anything valuable on the world wide web. I can bet that most of these large battery scrap yards will probably not be advertising scrap battery nor do they care about the web so if they did have some sort of website up, it will most likely not even be found.
If any of you out there have any leads or yards that have a large supply of scrap battery, I am interested. Please leave me a comment with either a source, a link, or some idea of where I can begin to look.
