bluray.versus.hd-dvd - Next generation format dilemma

Since both next generation formats have been released and I have yet to adopt to either one I still feel strongly about this subject. Both are great formats but should not the industry or consumers decide by now what is the next standard?

Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD have the capability to display video at 1080p and its been about a year since both formats have been released so the cost difference has been substantiated by better manufacturing methods and resources. But there is still split in the market between the industry where several major movie studios opted to support a particular format.

Personally, I think picture and audio quality is far more superior over current DVD and with players prices dropping, consumers like me want just a single format to come out as a clear standard. Whether it is Blu-ray or HD-DVD; let us have one where we can enjoy all the movies that will be released and let us be able to go to Blockbuster and pick out these movies. Instead, my local Blockbuster is not carrying either because demand is low or the store does not want to invest in it.

If you are a technophile and only care about the specs, then Blu-ray is probably the obvious choice because it has the larger capacity at 50gb which means more content, less compression is used. Also, the larger capacity will ensure that we are set for the future, right?

As for me, I was on the verge of purchasing a PS3 just so I can watch the awesome documentary, Planet Earth but I ended up not picking one up because sadly, my LCD TV does not support 1080p. Instead, I decided to just pick up an upconverting dvd player from Helios. There is another post on that where you can take a look at my review.
