project.web.development

My interest in making homepages started back in 1996 when we were using Mac’s to put together a presentation for a class in high school. That is the first time I was exposed to making homepages and linking pages and drawing multimedia images for a Biology class project. After experiencing that I have always had a passion for multimedia development. Then my family bought a Windows 95 machine and (cue drum roll) 56k modem. It opened up a whole new world to me from late night chats on Yahoo! chat and IRC to creating web homepage rings on Geocities. This is also when I started experimenting with Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw 3D and Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Come 2007, I have always tried to stay current but throughout the years, I have not dedicated much time to improving my already outdated HTML skills and multimedia aptitude. Suddenly, my friend has an ecommerce site which I felt lacked functionality and personality so I decided to re-do the entire site. However, it eventually opened up a passion from the past and since May of 2007, I have been on the fast track to re-learn HTML and the new Web 2.0 standards such as XHTML and using CSS.

I wanted to re-learn it from the ground up after stumbling for a month trying to figure out MySQL, PHP and working on an ecommerce site based on OSCommerce. This project has led me to obtain a HTML web developer and ASP developer certificates through W3Schools.com program as the first step along many steps to gain a career in this field.

Here are some of my current goals I will achieve by the end of 2007:

  • Become a guru at CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).
  • Learn MySQL and PHP.
  • Learn Java Scripting
  • Continue learning Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver.

Am I too late in this game and should I just hire someone to develop for me? I seriously think that will take away all the fun as this has become a hobby for me (I am hoping this will be a good source of some revenue as well). If nothing else, I hope this will be a step-by-step blue print for others to learn about web development.
